Steve Anshutz died tragically at the age of 27. I have a great deal to write about him but I need to do some more digging. There is a significant connection between him and Hiram Titus who has gotten a lot of ink here. If you remember Steve at all please write something here. He was only at Oberlin for a year before screaming off on a motorcycle headed to the west coast and more adventures.
I remember Steve very well. He was a hallmate my Freshman year (Burke 4th floor -- aka the penthouse). He came to Oberlin as a Conservatory student. Then, at some point in the second semester, Steve sold all of his musical instruments and bought a 650 CC Triumph Bonneville motorcycle. I have great memories of riding on the back of it -- no helmets of course. Steve liked riding over a particular set of railroad tracks, because on the approach, you would go up an incline which acted as a launching ramp, which caused you to go airborne. He always wanted to see how far he could go in the air. After two of these, I told him that I really didn't want to do that any more. Great guy!
I'm almost certain Steve was from Washington state, I forget where. I think the events Freshaman year were, in order: Second semester, he switched from the Conservatory to the College, then sold his musical instruments, and then bought the Triumph. I don't how he died, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was in an accident involving his motorcycle.
Doing a little on-line research, I failed to find an obituary for Steve from 50 years ago. But I did learn that he came to Oberlin from Ellensburg, Washington, where his father Herbert was on the faculty of Central Washington University. That's a hundred miles east of Seattle. And here's a photo of a similar motorcycle.
