Sally Cornwell (1967)

In the early 1970s when I had been in Geneva for a few years, Gayatri contacted me.  She was still known as Margaret in those days.  She was working for the UN on economic and trade issues in the Palais des Nations, and I was with the International Labour Office, just up the road.  We frequently had a picnic lunch on the UN grounds and discussed  living in Europe and the adjustments we  were both making.  Gayatri was full of pep and warmth, always ready for a new adventure and anxious to expand her icircle of friends.  She arramged a trip for the two of us to the Soviet Union one fall and even made friends in Moscow.  She kept up her music and generously played a "mobile" piano (which she transported) at some friends wedding in rural France, some 100 kilometres away.  As the years passed, Gayatri sought and found her spiritual grounding, managed to obtain an advanced degree, went to several Ashrams in India and finally left Geneva.  She was always a good friend, very generous, and left me her sterling collection of opera records, which I enjoy to this day.   Whenever ti was possible, Gayatri and I would meet when she passed through Geneva on some of her European trips. The last trip was a few years before she passed away.  A lively, generous and truly warm soul moved on.
