In his senior year, Laird met and later married his classmate, Ellen Terry. With a Master’s degree in adult education, he went on to teach basic reading and writing skills to beginning college students and students for whom English was a second language. He was a lifelong activist for political, humanitarian and economic justice, including work with The Coalition for Central America.  He passed away on June 25, 2022.
