Jeffrey Alteri

Jeffrey Allen Alteri died June 21, 2024.

Jeff was inducted into the Oberlin College Heisman Club Hall of Fame for his athletic achievements. Besides participating in lacrosse, he earned three varsity letters in soccer (1965-67). In those three seasons, the Yeomen compiled a record of 22-5-2, outscoring opponents 92-42 and shutting them out in 11 games. He was selected to the All-Ohio and All-Midwest Soccer Teams and was named as NSCAA All-American.

Jeff graduated in 1968 with a major in Psychology, served in the Army as a military intelligence officer, and received a M. A. in School Psychology from SUNY Oswego. He and his wife Nicki (Nancy Ramseyer ‘70) met at Oberlin. After several moves, they settled by a stream in the woods of Frederica, Delaware.

Indeed, Jeff was a great, long-term friend to many people and a superb athlete.  I enjoyed exchanging witticisms with him.

I am so saddened by this news. I have the fondest memories of Jeff from our freshman year when we lived in the same section of Burton Hall and participated together in so many activiities. And I was so glad to reconnect at our fiftieth Oberlin reunion in 2018.

I, too, was very happy to reconnect with Jeff at our 50th reunion, although I could hardly recognize him. I remember going to many soccer games where Jeff played an important role. I saw a fair amount of him freshman year because he lived in the next door section in Burton. My memory is a bit hazy; but we may have been in the same section Sophomore and Junior years. This is just a reminder to all of us that we are now face-to-face with our own mortality.

Like Bob, it took me a while to recognize that i was in fact talking with Jeff at the reunion; it was probably his mention of Bob Heavenrich and soccer that finally broke through.  A good man, Jeff will be missed, and you're right, Bob, another reminder of our being face-to-face- with our own mortality.  Thanks,

Ted
