In Memory

Stefanie Gutieri - : 1967

Stefanie Gutieri

Ann Marshall Young '67 writes that Stefanie died at the age of 50 (that would have been around 1995) from a heart attack.  "She was the last in her family to die, apart from relatives in Venezuela. Stefanie was my friend from the beginning at Oberlin, as she lived just across the hall from me at Dascomb. After freshman year, we were roommates one year at Tank, a semester at Cranford, and later for a year or so in Berkeley, California, in 1969. She had a unique humor and was kind. She is missed. (If I can find more, I will send it on.)"

Thank you Ann. I remember Stephanie as a lovely person. She was a good friend of my roommate Andy Whipple who spent most of his adult years, many of them suffering with Parkinson's disease (which Andy called "My friend Parko), in Oregon.

Actually, she died in 2005, when she would have been 60, not 50.  She, Sally Howlett, Pamela Mainardi, and I had gotten together the year before in Berkeley, California, at Sally's.  I will try to send a picture when I figure out how to do that!

And I had seen Stefanie and Andy in Oregon in the late 70s, early 80s, Tim.  We have lost so many.  It's sad.  Don't know if I will make it this fall, but if so, I hope to see you.

There are the four of us, I believe in Muir Woods in California, enjoying ourselves among the redwoods.  It was lovely.  Nice to have the memories, but sad that's all they are now.  A bittersweet time for many now, alas.  As with so many others we have lost, Stefanie was special in many ways.
