Susan Elisabeth Godshall (nee Hochschild) died on Saturday, October 11, 2025, after a long illness. Susan was a summa cum laude graduate of Oberlin College, majoring in English. She earned degrees from Yale University in law and architecture and was an instrumental force in economic and cultural life in New Haven, Connecticut.
For the Class of 1969 50th reunion website she wrote:
It baffles me what to post on this site. "Nothing" is an option but conveys a meanness of spirit that I don't feel. How I earned a living for 40 years is another option, but based on an unscientific sampling at my Law School 45th last year, no one is really interested in where you worked unless you founded Fidelity Investments (not me) or retired as Chief Justice of the Indiana Supreme Court (also not me). What Will Outlast Me is a third option, which in my case is the creation of a number of solid programs at Yale University that strengthen town/gown ties, one of them a significant cash payment to employees who buy a house in most New Haven neighborhoods and the other a voluntary payment to the City of $millions per year in recognition of fire service to the campus and other public benefits. I'm also 1/4 responsible for the most darling grandson in the world, but every grandmother says that. I mean it though-- proof below.
So I think my best option is to summarize What I've Learned, which pretty much comes down to two things: Be Nice (because what goes around often comes around) and Be Ready (because nothing is final). I'm so sorry to miss seeing everyone at the reunion.
